Dark hair.
Plan your balayage goal.

Balayage on dark hair can be discussed in terms of subtle contrast or a more noticeable change. Start by identifying how much of your dark base you want to retain and where you want lighter pieces.

Keep the depth.
Choose the contrast.

Two references may both be called balayage while showing very different results. Look at the dark areas as carefully as the light ones when choosing your example.

How much dark hair stays visible

Point out the balance of dark and light areas you enjoy in a photo. Ask how that balance could translate to your own length and haircut.

Where brightness begins

Show whether you prefer brightness mostly through the ends, around the face or higher through the lengths. Ask about the placement rather than requesting the technique name alone.

Your existing color matters

Tell the stylist whether the dark shade is natural or previously colored. Describe earlier lightening or color work, including treatments that are no longer obvious.

Before your
appointment.

Use these details to plan your visit and discuss your preferences with the salon.

Choose a reference close to your goal

Bring an example showing the level of contrast you want. Avoid relying on a highly filtered photo as the only description of the desired shade.

Discuss the first appointment

Ask what change is realistic at the initial visit and whether the goal needs a longer plan. Mention any deadline before scheduling.

Plan the finished look

Explain whether you usually wear your hair straight, wavy or curly. Ask how the placement will appear in your normal style and what maintenance to expect.

Does balayage on dark hair have to be blonde?

No. The conversation can focus on a smaller or larger contrast with your dark base. Discuss the shade and result separately from the technique name.

Can I reach my reference in one appointment?

That needs an individual assessment of your hair and history. Confirm the first-visit goal with the salon.

Will the result look identical straight and curled?

Styling changes which sections are visible and how they sit together. Share your normal styling routine and ask to discuss placement with that in mind.

How do I book?

Explore the balayage service page, then confirm the appointment if you have previous dark color or a substantial change in mind.
