Hair guide · Foster City

Growing out short hair.
Keep the goal in view.

When growing out a short cut, make preserving length part of every appointment brief. Decide which areas you want to leave alone and which details you would like to discuss as the shape changes.

Keep the length.
Plan the in-between shapes.

Your next haircut can be a checkpoint in a longer plan. Explain the destination you have in mind and ask which adjustments fit that goal.

Choose a destination

Bring a reference for the length or shape you are working toward. Explain which part of the current cut feels furthest from that goal.

Prioritize the areas to grow

Point out where you want to preserve length, including the front, sides or top. Ask what can be adjusted without cutting those areas back unnecessarily.

Discuss the current difficulty

Describe the specific issue, such as an outline you dislike or pieces that are hard to arrange. This is more useful than asking to shorten everything just to tidy it up.

Before your
appointment.

Use these details to plan your visit and discuss your preferences with the salon.

Bring a progress photo

A previous photo can show how the shape has changed. Use it to explain which stage you liked and what now feels awkward.

Ask about styling between visits

Discuss how to arrange the current length with the time and tools you already use. Ask which details are styling choices and which would require cutting.

Agree on the next checkpoint

Ask what would make a return visit useful. Plan around the shape you want to maintain rather than expecting one schedule to fit every short cut.

Will trimming make my hair grow faster?

A haircut changes the existing length and shape; it does not make hair grow faster from the roots. Discuss trims for managing the shape during the transition.

Should I avoid haircuts completely?

That is a preference to discuss around your goal. Explain how much length you want to retain and which parts, if any, you want adjusted.

How long until I reach the reference?

There is no fixed timeline for every starting cut and target. Discuss the difference in length and possible intermediate shapes.

What should I say when booking?

Say you are growing out a short cut and want to preserve length. Bring your target reference and identify the current detail you want help with.
